FARMINGTON, Conn., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire-AsiaNet/ –
Otis is the first elevator company ever to receive a Green Product Award
from the China Environmental Protection Foundation. The group recognized Otis
for its Gen2(TM) belted, machine-roomless elevator system. Otis is a unit of
United Technologies Corporation (NYSE: UTX).
"We are pleased to continue to support China’s sustainable development
policy by providing products that are energy efficient and environmentally
friendly," said Otis President Ari Bousbib. "This award reaffirms Otis’
commitment to ‘green’ buildings with its Gen2 belted elevator technology."
The Gen2 elevator system’s flat, polyurethane belts and its gearless
machine do not require any form of polluting lubrication, eliminating the need
for storage, cleanup and disposal of hazardous waste. The Gen2 system is also
50 percent more energy efficient than conventional elevators because its
low-inertia, permanent magnet gearless machine with variable frequency control
eliminates energy loss that occurs in more traditional geared systems.
Candidates for the Green Product Award must be leaders in their industry
with outstanding contributions or achievements in environmental protection. The
China Environmental Protection Foundation recognized the Gen2 system for its
"excellent quality in energy efficiency and environmental protection".
As part of its commitment to environmental protection, Otis has also taken
steps to minimize pollution in its manufacturing processes. In 2004, the Otis
Tianjin factory was awarded ISO14001 environment system certification by BSI,
the largest standards body in the world. Since then, other Otis joint ventures
and factories in China have been awarded ISO system certifications, including
the ISO9001 quality system certificate, ISO14001 environment system certificate
and OHSAS18001 occupational, health and safety management system certificate.
Last year, the Tianjin factory received the Environmental Protection Innovation
Award from United Technologies Corporation for reducing sewage disposal
expenditures by 58 percent.
