KUALA LUMPUR, Oct. 16 / Bernama - AsiaNet/ –
The 9th FESPIC Games KL06, scheduled from Nov 25 to Dec 1, is set to receive
huge media turnout and global coverage as some 200 media personnel from more
than 40 countries are expected to turn up for the Games in Kuala Lumpur. More
than 80 journalists and photographers from various countries have so far
confirmed their attendance and more are expected to send in their accreditation
forms in the coming weeks.
“We are expecting a huge number of foreign journalists and photographers due
to the significance of this year’s Games and the fact that this would be the
last FESPIC Games before it is being renamed the Asian Para Games in 2010,”
said KL06 Head of Communications, Ahmad Effendi Abdullah. Despite the Games
being close to the DOHA Asian Games, the KL06 Organisers are confident that it
would not affect media turnout for the Kuala Lumpur Games.
Media invitations and accreditation forms have been extended to all
participating nations and more than 200 foreign journalists and photographers
are expected to be on assignment for the Games. “Taking into account the number
of local media representatives, all in, we can expect some 250 journalists and
photographers on duty for the event,” said Effendi. Media personnel will have
access to the Main Press Centre which will be located at Stadium Putra in Bukit
Jalil.
Meanwhile, local television stations are also expected to beef up their
coverage of the Games with RTM commiting to a one-hour daily highlights show on
TV1. The organizers, however, are still working out broadcast plans with other
private television stations stations such as TV3 and ASTRO.
FESPIC Games is the biggest multisports and multi disability event for
athletes with disabilities in Asia and Oceania and the world second largest
Games after the Paralympics. The organizers are working round the clock to
ensure that the Games runs smoothly despite the lack in funds and sponsorship.
The Games will be renamed Asian Para Games in 2010 following the dissolution of
two organizations, namely the FESPIC Federation and the Asian Paralympic
Council. The Kuala Lumpur games would also see the birth of Paralympic
Organisation of Asia.
Organised by the Malaysian Paralympic Council (MPC) and supported by the
Mnistry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Women, Family and Community
Development, the Games will feature 19 sports namely archery, athletics,
badminton, boccia, cycling, fencing, goalball, judo, lawn bowls, power lifting,
sailing, shooting, soccer, swimming, table tennis, tenpin bowling, sitting
volleyball, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis.
